Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is surrogacy?

Surrogacy is when a special woman decides to carry a child for you and your partner or spouse. This benefits many women who are unable to carry a child for medical reasons or for gay couples or single parents requiring a surrogate mother and egg/sperm donor to build their family.

Q: Why choose India to do surrogacy?

India is currently the most affordable and legally accessible option for international clients. It is up to 1/3rd the price of surrogacy in the U.S. India is one of the few countries to allow commercial surrogacy where surrogates get paid a substantial fee. Another major reason is that English is spoken widely by the doctors and staff. An egg and sperm donor program is also available for those who require it, both Indian and other nationalities.

Q: How are surrogates chosen?

Surrogates must be under 34 years old, married, have at least one healthy child and had no problems during childbirth. She should be a non-smoker and not drink alcohol. She will be screened for STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) and hormone levels. Your doctor will choose the surrogate based on her character and the above health factors.

Q: Why choose our agency?

We have carefully selected the doctors and ensured that the facilities are sanitary and up to Western standards. We also have built a relationship with a lawyer in India who will guide you through the intricate process of contracts, immigration paperwork and cultural ways of India. In addition to arranging your accommodations and transportation, your Surrogacy Consultant will guide you throughout the entire IVF process from the beginning until you bring your baby home.

Q: When can we begin our surrogacy journey?

After we get your information and the doctor accepts your case, it generally takes about 2 months to find a surrogate and prepare you or egg donor and the surrogate for the IVF procedure.

Q: As a Canadian, are there any benefits to going to India for IVF and surrogacy?

Yes! In Canada, you may qualify to have the government pay a portion of the IVF and travel expenses via a health spending account. Please call us to learn more information on this opportunity to save money.

Q: May I meet the surrogate?

Yes, you may meet your surrogate. However, we highly recommend that you allow your lawyer, Sunil Agrawal, to keep communication between you and her and her family.

Q: Where does the surrogate live and how is she taken care of?

Your surrogate will live with other surrogates in adequate housing for all 9 months of pregnancy. A surrogate coordinator will be assigned to her to ensure that she is taking her medications, providing her daily meals and bringing her to the hospital when needed.

Q: Are egg or sperm donors available?

Yes, Indian egg and sperm donors are available. For caucasian or other nationalities, you may go through a 3rd party agency or contact an agency we work with at an additional fee. We provide donor profiles with pictures and family medical history. Your donor will also be medically screened for hormone levels, STDs and other diseases.

Q: How long should I stay in India if I am using my own eggs?

This depends on whether you want to start medications in India or in your home country and which medication protocol will be used. However, you should plan to stay approximately 2 weeks from Cycle Day 2 or 3 of your period to the day after egg pick-up. It can be shorter if you plan to start stimulation medication in your home country The dates can vary according to the amount of stimulation needed and how test scans go, but we will provide you with a complete schedule that will best estimate this before your trip.

Q: We are a gay or straight couple using an egg donor in India. How long will we need to stay in India?

You only need to stay two days to give your sperm sample and visit your lawyer and doctor. However, there is another alternative where you don't need to come to India at all. In some places, you can arrange to ship your sperm sample from your local fertility clinic to India. They may have the ability to rent you a container and ship the sample using a fast courier. The clinic in India can then ship this back to them at your expense.

Q: I would like to use my friend or relative as my egg donor and she will accompany us on the trip. Is this possible?

Yes, one of our doctors does accept a friend or relative as your egg donor.

Q: How many embryos are implanted in the surrogate?

Depending on the number of embryos (fertilized eggs) available and the grading of those embryos, no more than 4 of those embryos are implanted in one IVF attempt. Any leftover embryos over this amount can be frozen for later use in a frozen embryo transfer cycle.

Q: I'm over 35 and am not sure on my egg quality or how many eggs can be retrieved. How can I improve my chances?

You can decide to cycle with an egg donor at the same time so that more eggs can be available for the embryo transfer and embryo freezing. You can then decide whether to implant only your embryos, a mix of yours and donor's embryos or only the donor's embryos depending on the number retrieved, fertilized, and those embryos graded highly. You may also opt to use two surrogates at an additional cost to increase success of the IVF attempt.

Q: Do you allow single parents or gay/lesbian couples?

Yes, we offer our services to single women, single men and the GLBT community. We have ensured that the lawyer, bed & breakfast accommodations and doctors accept these cases without discrimination.

Q: When the baby is born, whose names are on the Indian birth certificate?

Both intended parents are placed as the mother and father on the birth certificate. For a gay couple who uses an egg donor, the mother's name will be unknown. The birth certificate is the key document for immigration back to your home country. Your lawyer will ensure that the birth certificate is correctly made and expedited as soon as possible.

Q: What is the average success rate at our clinics in India?

The success rate is 45% per cycle of IVF/ ICSI in women under 35 years of age and is a comparable average among the best IVF centers in the world. If you are using a young egg donor (under the age of 25), your chances are about 75% per cycle of IVF/ICSI.

Q: What happens when if you fail at the first IVF attempt?

It is well-known that IVF often does not succeed on the first attempt. We offer discounted rates for the second or more attempts, which will be discussed with you prior to your next attempt. If enough embryos were frozen for a future attempt, they will be used on the subsequent attempt and it will be much more affordable than doing a fresh IVF attempt.
